Kelowna Sparta defeats Terrace River Kings in game one of the Coy Cup
The Kelowna Sparta senior AA hockey team started the Coy Cup tournament, in Whitehorse Yukon, on a high note. They are now 1-0 after beating last year's Coy Cup runners up and current Central Interior Hockey League champions, the Terrace River Kings. Sparta is currently playing with 11 skaters and two goalies, awaiting reinforcements for Thursday's game versus the Whitehorse Huskies.
The first period ended scoreless and Sparta was up 2-1 after 40 minutes of play. The final frame was exciting as Terrace pushed for the win, but a late goal for Kelowna ensured the win and a 3-2 final score. Shawn Muller (University of Victoria Vikes), Sasha Golin (C) and Layne Stopanski (A) had goals in the win. Assists came from Aaron Buat (A), Matt Elia, Shawn Mueller, Trent Redschlag and Kevin Walrod.
Sparta is back on the ice Wednesday for game two where they will play the North Island Capitals. The Capitals lost 6-3 to the Whitehorse Huskies on Tuesday night. The team has set up a gofundme page and appreciates any support from the local community: https://ca.gofundme.com/kelownasparta.
